Good morning Buffalo. Here's everything you need to know this Sunday.
SABRES DESTROY TAMPA BAY 6 TO 2, WIN THREE STRAIGHT
Buffalo completely dominated the Lightning last night at Benchmark International Arena. Josh Norris scored twice, Rasmus Dahlin had a goal and two assists, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 36 shots. The Sabres chased Andrei Vasilevskiy after putting up five goals on just 14 shots, his first regulation loss since December 18. Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson also scored. Thompson now has eight points during a seven game point streak. Zach Metsa added a goal and an assist and Zach Benson picked up a helper in his return after missing four games. Buffalo is now 35-19-6 and just four points behind Tampa for first in the Atlantic. The Sabres are 16-2-1 in their last 19 road games and ended Tampa's 10 game home winning streak. This team is rolling. Next up they host Vegas on Tuesday night.
FATHER OF FIVE KILLED IN WORKPLACE ACCIDENT AT BURGARD HIGH SCHOOL
The family of Jose "Junior" Vasquez, a 32 year old electrician from Buffalo, is demanding answers after he was killed in a workplace accident at Burgard High School on February 20. His family says Vasquez was alone parking a scissor lift when he became pinned against a wall. No students or staff were in the building at the time. Vasquez leaves behind five children, the youngest just nine months old and the oldest 15. His family says he had recently been working toward starting his own business and told them just two weeks before his death that he wanted to leave something behind for his kids. Buffalo Public Schools confirmed the incident and said an investigation is ongoing. A GoFundMe has been set up to support his children.
ROHINGYA REFUGEE FOUND DEAD AFTER BORDER PATROL RELEASE
The death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam has become a national story. The 56 year old Rohingya refugee was nearly blind, spoke no English, and was found dead five days after Border Patrol agents dropped him off at a closed coffee shop on Niagara Street on the night of February 19. He was wearing orange jail booties and had no phone or way to navigate the city. His body was found about four miles away on Perry Street. Shah Alam had been in the Erie County Holding Center for nearly a year after a misunderstanding with police in which he was using a curtain rod as a walking stick. Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan called Border Patrol's actions "inhumane" and a "dereliction of duty." Governor Hochul and Congressman Tim Kennedy are both calling for investigations. The community laid him to rest Thursday at a local mosque. The cause of death is still pending.
BEANE AT THE NFL COMBINE: BUILDING THE 2026 BILLS
Bills GM Brandon Beane and new head coach Joe Brady spent the week in Indianapolis at the NFL Scouting Combine. Beane said any new pass catcher for Josh Allen needs four key traits: speed, blocking ability, versatility, and reliability. The Bills met with multiple receivers including Texas A&M standout KC Concepcion who was born in New York and says the Bills are his dad's favorite team. Beane confirmed they will pick up Dalton Kincaid's fifth year option and said something needs to get done about Dawson Knox's $17 million cap hit. Buffalo currently sits about $10 million over the salary cap with the new league year opening March 11. Beane believes there is solid depth in this draft class and expects opportunities to grab impact players at pick 26 or potentially trade up if the right guy is there.
LAWMAKERS PUSH FOR $250 MILLION IN AIRPORT UPGRADES
Western New York lawmakers are pushing for $250 million in the state budget to modernize the Buffalo Niagara International Airport and the Niagara Falls International Airport. Assemblymember Patrick Chludzinski and State Senator April Baskin say the airports were left out of the last two rounds of the state's airport revitalization program despite Buffalo being the busiest airport in upstate New York. The airports support nearly 14,000 jobs and generate $139 million in tax revenue every year. This comes on top of nearly $1.5 million in federal funding recently secured for new snow removal equipment at the Buffalo airport.
