Good morning, Buffalo. Josh Allen just got a weapon, the Sabres can't stop winning, and Saturday might hit 70 degrees. Let's get into it.
Bills Trade for D.J. Moore and Buffalo Just Got a Whole Lot More Dangerous
Josh Allen finally got some help. The Bills agreed to acquire wide receiver D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears on Thursday, sending a second round pick to Chicago and getting Moore plus a fifth rounder in return. This is the biggest move Brandon Beane has made since he traded for Stefon Diggs back in 2020, and it fills the exact hole that has been haunting this team for two straight seasons.
Moore has four 1,000 yard seasons under his belt and 608 career catches. He already knows new head coach Joe Brady from their time together in Carolina, where Moore posted his best numbers, including 1,193 yards and a career high 18.1 yards per catch in 2020. He is an instant upgrade over everything Buffalo trotted out there last year.
His contract is hefty at $23.5 million fully guaranteed in 2026, with the Bills also guaranteeing $15.5 million of his 2028 salary. That tells you Buffalo sees this as a long term play. The trade becomes official March 11 when the new league year kicks in. Pair Moore with Khalil Shakir in the slot and suddenly this offense looks like it has some teeth again.
Sabres Demolish Pittsburgh 5 to 1, Win Streak Hits Four
The Sabres are rolling and they do not care who knows it. Buffalo went into Pittsburgh last night and came out with a 5 to 1 beatdown, extending their winning streak to four games. Before that it was a 3 to 2 win over Vegas, a 3 to 2 road win in Florida, and a 6 to 2 stomping of Tampa Bay.
At 37 and 19, Buffalo sits in second place in the Atlantic Division, right behind Tampa Bay. The playoff picture is looking very real. The boys come home Saturday night to host Nashville at 5:30 PM, then turn around and face Tampa Bay on Sunday. Two massive games at KeyBank Center this weekend. Be loud.
Comptroller Hires Fired City Employee and the Council Is Not Happy
This one is wild. City Comptroller Barbara Miller Williams went ahead and officially hired Karla Thomas as her new executive assistant and chief of staff. The salary? Over $94,000 a year. The catch? Thomas was fired from the city back in 2010 after the Human Resources department she ran paid out more than $2 million in benefits to deceased city employees. Yes, people who were already dead.
Common Council member Mitch Nowakowski called the move alarming and contradictory, especially given that Miller Williams is supposed to be the one guarding the city's finances. The comptroller fired back saying Thomas will not be working in any financial division and that her experience makes her qualified. The council plans to discuss it further next week. Stay tuned, because this one is far from over.
